1.0 General +
GRP Australia sell a range of glass reinforced composite products some of which are pultruded and some like the grating are moulded. The information provided here is general in nature and provides an overview of GRP products. For more information please contact GRP Australia.
Pultruded glass reinforced products (GRP) are a composite material made by a continuous moulding process using fibre reinforcement in a thermosetting resin. The properties of the pultruded sections can be varied to suit the application by changing the resin type, the number and size of the reinforcement material and additives used.
Resins
3 main types of resins are used as the matrix in our products:
1. Vinyl ester resin – excellent corrosion resistance and good thermal properties
2. Isophthalic polyester resin – good corrosion resistance
3. Phenolic resin – good corrosion resistance, high fire resistance and low smoke generation.Additives
The two main additives used are fire resistants and pigments to achieve desired colours.
The GRP products can be supplied in various colours to suit the application and no painting is required.

2.0 Typical Mechanical Properties +
Typical mechanical properties for GRP Australia pultruded products are noted in the table below.

3.0 Working with GRP Products +
GRP pultruded and moulded products can be cut and drilled using woodworking hand tools. Due to the abrasive nature of the glass reinforcing, the cutting tools should be carbide tipped or diamond coated.
There are several methods for joining GRP to GRP or other materials. These include:
- Bolt and nut connections. Possibly the most common method of connecting pultruded profiles. Flat washers should be used on both sides to help distribute the load.
- Riveted Connections.
- Screwed connections using self-tapping screws.
- Bonded joints. Bonded joints can also be used in conjunction with mechanical fasteners to provide a very strong joint.
Work Practices
Cutting, drilling or machining GRP produces a dust that can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, nose and throat. Workers should take steps to reduce their exposure to the dust by using suitable personal protective gear and working in well ventilated areas. Use dust extraction in poorly ventilated areas.
Recommended personal protection equipment:
- Particulate respirator which complies with AS/NZ 1716:2012.
- Safety glasses or goggles.
- Ear protection.
- Gloves.
- Long sleeved shirt with closed collar and long pants.

4.0 Chemical Resistance +
GRP pultruded products are resistant to a wide range of corrosive chemicals. The type and temperature of the chemical will influence which resin type is best suited for the application.

5.0 Fire Properties +
All GRP Australia products contain fire resistants however, the ultimate fire rating properties of GRP pultruded products will depend on the composite mix.
In many cases it is possible to adjust the composite matrix to achieve a fire technical requirement.
IFR-10 ( isophthalic polyester with fire resistant) tested to AS 1530 achieved the following results:
Spread of Flame index (0-10) 0 Heat Evolved Index (0-10) 1 Smoke developed Index (0-10) 5 Ignitability Index (0-20) 13 -
6.0 Dimensional Tolerances +
The table below details the typical profile dimensional tolerances of GRP pultruded products.
Nominal Dimension (mm) Tolerance (mm) 0 - 20 ±.30 20 - 100 ±.40 100 - 300 ±0.5 Profile Angular Tolerances ±1.25°
